The $500M Hit Keeping a Shared Universe Afloat Co-Exists on Streaming

Sony deserves credit for its persistent efforts to create its own Marvel universe, even though it’s becoming increasingly clear that it may never succeed. However, Venom: Let There Be Carnage did manage to give the studio’s Spider-Man Universe a reprieve.

Despite its flaws, Tom Hardy’s debut as the symbiotic superhero grossed a staggering $856 million worldwide, which unfortunately encouraged those responsible for Sam Raimi’s abandoned Spider-Man 4 and the defunct Amazing Spider-Man saga to believe that more Marvel content was the way to go.

The performance of Morbius speaks for itself, while the prospects for Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web remain uncertain due to the lack of enthusiasm shown thus far. However, we can at least expect Venom 3 to be a smashing success, considering that the second installment managed to earn over half a billion dollars in theaters despite being released during the pandemic.

As expected, Woody Harrelson and Tom Hardy deliver compelling performances in their intense face-off, and director Andy Serkis fully embraces the film’s non-serious tone in Let There Be Carnage. However, being better than its predecessor is not exactly the highest praise.

Nevertheless, Venom 2 has shown impressive staying power and has become one of the most popular titles on streaming platforms once again. According to FlixPatrol, it has achieved the number one spot on Netflix in several countries and is also among the top 10 titles on Prime Video in 23 additional nations.
