The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro (2023) is a wireless gaming headset that boasts an impressive design, comfortable fit, long battery life, and a fantastic microphone. It’s an updated version of the 2020 BlackShark V2 Pro, with notable improvements. While I haven’t tried the 2020 version, the 2023 model is a solid upgrade over my regular headset, the 2020-released BlackShark V2 X. Both headphones fall in the same gaming category and have a similar appearance, but the 2023 BlackShark V2 Pro has subtle improvements that make it a solid upgrade if you have an older gaming headset.
The design of the 2023 Razer BlackShark V2 Pro is both different and similar to other gaming headsets in the Razer lineup. The build quality of this model is much more premium than the BlackShark V2 X and other older Razer headset models. The sliders on each side of the headphones are sturdier and easier to use than older models. Despite the sturdier sliders, the headphone doesn’t feel too tight on your head, even when worn for extended periods. The top of the headband is made of a leather or leather-like material with Razer written on it, while its underside is made of a soft fabric with a lot of padding inside. The earcups are made of plastic with a matte finish and feature the Razer snake logo on each side. The earpads are made of a squishy fabric-covered memory foam material that is comfortable to wear and breathable. However, the earpads can’t be removed, which is a disadvantage over the BlackShark V2 X.
The left earcup houses most of the controls for the V2 Pro, including the on/off switch, mic and mute button, USB-C port for charging, and volume knob. The volume knob lacks stoppers, which can be frustrating, and the headphone doesn’t feature a 3.5mm aux jack. The right earcup has a single button that switches between 2.4GHz, Bluetooth, and audio modes.
The 2023 BlackShark V2 Pro is a wireless-only headphone that offers a 2.4GHz wireless connection and Bluetooth 5.2 wireless connection. The two wireless modes allow the user to pair with multiple devices simultaneously. However, you cannot use both connections at the same time. The headphone can be plugged into your PC for charging and used in wireless mode simultaneously. The lack of wired audio might be a downside for some users.
Like all other Razer devices, the app lets you customize sound settings, profiles, EQ presets, microphone settings, and THX Spatial Audio features. The headset has excellent sound quality that works well for different types of media, with a balanced and clear sound that delivers crisp background audio details, rich vocals, and powerful bass. Bass Boost can further increase the bass, but some users may find it overkill. The headset also supports THX Spatial Audio, which creates a realistic 3D sound that enhances your spatial awareness and positional accuracy while gaming. The pro-tuned equalizer presets for different games are a highlight of the software.
The microphone, Razer’s HyperClear Super Wideband Mic, comes with built-in and external pop filters. It delivers crystal clear voice communication with a wider frequency range than previous headset mics and less distortion. The mic runs at a high 32kHz sampling rate, which is twice as high as most gaming headsets. The battery life of the BlackShark V2 Pro is also impressive.
