‘Supermoon’ Dazzles Sky-Watchers Around The World

Sky-watchers from all around the world had their eyes fixed on the sky as they witnessed the awe-inspiring spectacle of the second “supermoon” of the season.

This particular supermoon, the second one out of four, appeared larger than usual while hovering close to the horizon, creating a mesmerizing display of colors.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is in closer proximity to Earth compared to its average distance. Due to the elliptical orbit of the moon around the Earth, there is a specific day each month when it comes closest. It is only when this day coincides with the full moon that it is referred to as a supermoon.

While the term “supermoon” is popular in astrology, it is not an astronomical term. Astronomically, a supermoon is called a “perigee” full moon, referring to a full moon that occurs within 90% of the moon’s closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.

The “Sturgeon Moon,” as it is commonly called, reached its full illumination when it was 222, 023 miles (357,311 kilometers) away from Earth. Supermoons typically appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than a regular full moon.

Traditionally, the full moon in August is referred to as the “Sturgeon Moon” in the northern hemisphere. This name is derived from the seasonal presence of sturgeon fish in the Great Lakes region of North America during this time of the year.

The full moon in August is also known by various other names, such as the “Grain Moon,” “Corn Moon,” “Lynx Moon,” “Lightning Moon,” and “Dispute Moon.”

The final full moon of the season, which will also be a supermoon, is set to rise on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. It will be called a “Blue Supermoon” as it will be the second full moon occurring in a calendar month, a rare occurrence that happens in years with 13 full moons. However, there will be one more supermoon on September 29 known as the “Harvest Supermoon.”

Here’s wishing you clear skies and unforgettable celestial experiences.
