Super Mario Bros. Movie Rakes in $377 Million in Worldwide Box Office Debut

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has surpassed all expectations by amassing a staggering $377 million (approximately Rs. 3,088 crore) at the global box office. This remarkable figure establishes a new record for the highest opening of an animated movie, surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2, which, like Mario, benefited from an existing intellectual property. Despite receiving mixed reviews, positive word-of-mouth and the movie’s PG rating have contributed to its success among both general audiences and franchise fans. International markets, comprising 70 countries, generated roughly $173 million (about Rs. 1,416 crore) in revenue, with some releases occurring later on April 7. In contrast, the US and Canada witnessed an earlier release on April 5 and earned $204.6 million (about Rs. 1,674 crore).

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Bros. Movie also achieved the highest-ever opening for a video game adaptation, outperforming the 2016 film Warcraft, which grossed $210 million (about Rs. 1,719 crore) upon its release. The Mario film has garnered a 96 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A rating on CinemaScore, thanks to its inclusion of Easter eggs from previous games, catering to devoted fans.

Furthermore, the movie serves as an origin story for Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), portraying them as Brooklyn plumbers who are transported to the enchanting Mushroom Kingdom to wage war against the infamous Bowser (Jack Black). Mario forms alliances with the likes of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), and the Mushroom army, embarking on a thrilling adventure across the stars and the Rainbow Road.

In the realm of Hollywood, such a triumph typically leads to a sequel. Even Lionsgate greenlit a fifth John Wick film following the immense success of John Wick: Chapter 4. During an interview, Jack Black, who portrays the villainous Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, shared his thoughts on a potential sequel. He mentioned that Bowser’s return is not guaranteed, drawing parallels to his experience with the Kung Fu Panda movies, where each installment featured a different villain. Black playfully suggested Pedro Pascal as Wario, a more formidable adversary for Mario.

Pascal, known for his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian season 3 and as Joel Miller in The Last of Us video game adaptation, has already showcased his versatility. His portrayal of Mario in a parody sketch for Saturday Night Live further adds to the intriguing possibilities for a Mario sequel. The Last of Us HBO series, which received widespread acclaim, is also preparing for a second season.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently showing in theaters worldwide.
