Status Ads: WhatsApp chief tells where the company is planning to show ads on the app

There has been a lot of chatter around Meta monetising WhatsApp. The company has said that it will introduce ads on the app but nothing concrete has been done so far. As per a recent development, we know where the company could show ads in other places.
In an interview with Brazilian media, WhatsApp’s head Will Cathcart said the company may show ads in Status and Channels. He clarified that WhatsApp is not planning to show any ads in the main inbox.
“The reason I qualified [sic] the answer is that there could be ads in other places — channels or status. For example, channels might charge people to subscribe, they might be exclusive to paid members or the owners might want to promote the channel. But, no, we won’t put ads in your inbox,” Cathcart said.
According to TechCrunch, a Meta spokesperson said that the company is not currently testing Status ads in any country.
WhatsApp may monetise chats
Earlier this year, a report claimed that WhatsApp may be looking to leverage its huge consumer base in countries like India and Brazil to make WhatsApp a profitable asset. The company was claimed to be exploring a way to generate revenue by monetising business conversations with customers.
WhatsApp is being used by more than 2 billion people across the world, out of which India has a strong 500 million daily active user base. The company has relied on its business messaging and click-to-WhatsApp ads on other platforms for revenue.
For each conversation, companies reportedly pay up to 15 cents, or about 40 paise, depending on the kind of chat and the country in which the exchange takes place. Consumers in India use WhatsApp to book Uber rides and get movie recommendations on their Netflix accounts. This means that WhatsApp may make more revenue with more conversations.
