Video game adaptations are a notoriously difficult nut to crack, but The Super Mario Bros Movie proved it can be done successfully. With its billion-dollar worldwide box office haul, the movie stayed true to the source material, littered with references to Nintendo history. However, the upcoming Borderlands might be facing significant challenges. While it boasts Craig Mazin, the writer of Chernobyl and The Last of Us, as well as Eli Roth of Cabin Fever and Hostel for its director, and an all-star cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, the movie has encountered problems.
Borderlands began filming in early 2021 and wrapped up in June of that year. However, nearly two years later, there is still no trailer. Rumors suggest that test audiences have reacted negatively to the movie, and as a result, Eli Roth has been removed as director, with Deadpool’s Tim Miller taking over to reshape the film. While Lionsgate has cited Roth’s scheduling conflict with his upcoming Thanksgiving as the reason for his departure, insiders suggest there are more serious issues at play.
Furthermore, it is unclear whether the proposed reshoots have taken place, particularly as the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood is causing delays. Borderlands finds itself in murky waters, with the studio not promoting the film, nor can it provide a fixed release date. As a result, it appears that the project is in trouble. Hopefully, the producers can rectify the situation and produce a blockbuster hit.
