Alphabet’s Google is poised to appoint Sreenivasa Reddy, a manufacturing and policy veteran, as its top government affairs executive in India. Reddy, currently a senior engineering executive at Microsoft, is expected to join Google later this year. He brings with him a wealth of experience, having worked in senior positions at Apple’s India regulatory team and as the head of government relations at Ericsson AB’s local unit. Reddy’s expertise will be valuable as Google seeks to expand hardware assembly and navigate regulatory challenges in India.
Google plans to assemble its Pixel range of smartphones in India in an effort to diversify production away from China. This move could also lead to local manufacturing of other Google hardware products. Additionally, Reddy will assist Google in addressing legal challenges, such as the ongoing antitrust charges in India related to its mobile operating systems.
Google sees India as a key growth market and is actively working to cater to the country’s needs. The company is adding more local languages to its services and exploring ways to make its Android smartphones more affordable. In fact, Google plans to open a global financial-technology center in Gujarat International Finance Tech-City (GIFT City) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state.
Representatives for Google and Reddy did not respond to requests for comment. It is worth noting that Google’s previous India policy head, Archana Gulati, left the company last year.
