Spotify Developing YouTube Music-inspired Feature: Implications for App Users

Spotify is experimenting with a new feature that allows users to enjoy their favourite music even when they have no connection to the internet. The feature, called “Your Offline Mix,” generates a playlist that users can access when offline. For instance, users might find it challenging to get an internet connection while traveling in remote mountainous regions or being on a flight. The new feature would automatically save a mix of their recently played tracks so that they can stay entertained even when disconnected from the internet.

Spotify CEO, Daniel Ek, shared a screenshot of the feature on Twitter, but he didn’t disclose when it will be available for use. It’s important to note that Spotify previously allowed users to download playlists or albums for offline listening. However, manually selecting what to download for offline use can be an overwhelming task. The new feature will come in handy for users facing such situations.

Reportedly, Spotify has been developing the feature since 2020. They have now made it to market, catching up with platforms like YouTube Music, which has been offering a similar feature called “Offline Mixtape” for some time. YouTube Music downloads frequently listened to music and songs that users have liked, among others, for offline listening.

Spotify recently announced another round of job cuts that will impact 200 employees, making up nearly 2% of its workforce. Only Spotify’s podcast division is affected, and the company said that it is proceeding with a tailored approach optimized for each show and creator. Spotify will support affected individuals with generous severance packages, including extended healthcare coverage and immediate access to outplacement support.
