In the nineteen seasons of the hit medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy, fans have experienced plenty of rollercoaster drama. Recently, audiences had to say goodbye to Ellen Pompeo’s character, Doctor Meredith Grey, who left the show after being a series regular throughout its run. In the mid-season finale of Season 19, Meredith emailed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to announce her departure, bringing the storyline to an emotional climax. In recent years, Dr. Grey had faced numerous challenges, including the loss of her home in a fire, and was now ready to move on to a new chapter in her life. However, it appears that this farewell may not be final after all.
According to a recent interview with Variety, Pompeo herself revealed that Dr. Grey could return to the show in a guest appearance in Season 20. Although her character appeared in fewer episodes in Season 19, her departure to research Alzheimer’s disease with the Catherine Fox Foundation in Boston will undoubtedly impact the show. Pompeo commented on the research surrounding Alzheimer’s and Meredith’s exit from the show, teasing:
“It’s a little bit of trickery, because I’m not completely gone. Actually, the storyline is very cool. There’s a lot of real research that’s changing very rapidly about Alzheimer’s disease and about what they believe is the cause of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s pretty controversial. So Meredith’s character left to go to Boston because her daughter needed to go to a special school. I will be making some appearances hopefully next year, if I can find some time.”
In the interview, Pompeo reunited with Katherine Heigl, who previously played the fan-favorite character Isobel Stevens in the early seasons of the show. When asked about Meredith’s departure, Heigl inquired whether they had to “completely say goodbye.” To this, Pompeo responded, “No, it’s not a complete goodbye. And I think we’ve got an interesting story to tell.” Given that Meredith was one of the show’s key protagonists, it’s understandable that fans may struggle with her departure. A minor presence could be just what the show needs to keep her story integrated into the future plot.
In an exciting announcement, ABC has renewed Grey’s Anatomy for its 20th season, despite Pompeo’s exit. While the show will undoubtedly shift its focus to new characters, fans will still get to enjoy the beloved Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and its characters. Season 20 will also see Meg Marinis taking over as showrunner from Krista Vernoff.
