Sony Announces Conclusion of Current CoD Contract for PlayStation with the Release of 2023’s Game

As per a recent court document revealed during the ongoing Microsoft-FTC trial, it has been disclosed that the forthcoming Call of Duty game in 2023 will be the final PlayStation entry covered under contract. PlayStation boss Jim Ryan confirmed this information in a letter obtained by The Verge, stating, “[T]he last game covered by the contract is a Call of Duty title to be released in late 2023.” It’s worth noting that the specific game for this year, believed to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, has yet to be officially announced by Activision.

The PlayStation-Call of Duty marketing deal, which commenced in 2015 with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, allowed PlayStation users to access exclusive maps, weapons, and additional content before other platforms. This agreement also included PlayStation branding in advertisements and unique features for the PlayStation versions. PlayStation became known as the “home of Call of Duty,” as stated by former PlayStation CEO Andrew House. The deal between PlayStation and Activision marked a significant shift from the previous generation, wherein Microsoft held a marketing relationship with Activision and had exclusive rights for launching Call of Duty map packs on Xbox first.

Despite the expiration of the marketing deal, it is unlikely to impact the future release of Call of Duty on PlayStation. Microsoft has made it clear that they will continue to bring Call of Duty to PlayStation if their acquisition of Activision Blizzard is approved. In the event that the acquisition falls through, it is safe to assume that Activision will continue supporting PlayStation.
