A successful trial of police robots has led to their permanent deployment at Singapore’s main international airport.
The wheel-based robots, equipped with cameras, sensors, a display panel, and a siren, can autonomously roam through the airport lounges. They also feature built-in speakers for remote communication with nearby individuals, and microphones for easy access to human officers if assistance is required.
Standing at 5 foot 7 inches (170 centimeters) tall, the robots can extend their height using a mast with a camera, providing a clear view of their immediate surroundings for the police operations room.
Currently, two robots are operational at Changi Airport Terminal 4, with plans to deploy more across the city-state.
Superintendent Lim Ke Wei of the Airport Police Division expressed his views on the new robotic recruits, stating, “These patrol robots operate autonomously alongside our officers, providing additional eyes and support on the ground. The integration of robotics enhances the operational efficiency and capabilities of our frontline officers, enabling them to be more effective in their duties.”
Police departments worldwide are exploring the potential benefits of robotic technology in enhancing the daily duties of human officers. The New York Police Department, for instance, recently introduced several robots on the city streets, marking their second attempt after a previous initiative was halted due to concerns over costs and privacy.
