This category aims to bring attention to the beauty and importance of female birds.

The Galbatross Project believes that the neglect of female birds extends beyond photography and into scientific research and conservation efforts. In many cases, habitat conservation plans and data collection mostly focus on the needs of male birds, ignoring the unique requirements of females. This bias can harm female birds’ chances of survival. For example, a study on golden-winged warblers found that areas predominantly inhabited by females were more likely to be destroyed due to development, yet conservation plans primarily targeted male-dominated regions.

The Galbatross Project’s founders, including Purbita Saha and Joanna Wu, argue that understanding the habitat needs of female birds is crucial for effective conservation. By studying female bird mortality rates and advocating for mindful data collection, they hope to shed light on the disadvantages females face and encourage scientists to consider the differences between male and female individuals in their research. They propose that a feature be added to the popular bird observation platform, eBird, allowing users to easily record the sex of the birds they observe. Despite challenges in identifying the sex of certain bird species, researchers stress the importance of making inferences based on context and behavior to gather more comprehensive data.
