Science Unveils New Species of Beaked Dinosaur Discovered in Utah

Paleontologists have struggled to learn about certain time periods in the Age of Dinosaurs, including the middle part of the Cretaceous period, from about 83 million to 113 million years ago. However, a recently discovered dinosaur named Iani smithi, found in the 99-million-year-old rock of Utah, is helping to fill in the gaps. Iani was a small herbivorous dinosaur, about 12 feet long, and belongs to the little-known group of rhabdodontomorphs. This group of dinosaurs was the medium-sized herbivore niche in their communities and has only recently been identified. Although Iani may seem plain without any outstanding features, it helps outline the changes that led up to the classic dinosaur communities of the Late Cretaceous. The discovery of Iani helps paleontologists understand and describe the fossils of the Mussentuchit Member of Utah’s Cedar Mountain Formation, which contains over 40 million years of dinosaur evolution in western North America. The discovery of Iani adds new evidence that the dinosaurs thrived in North America. Iani and its relatives died out, and the reason for this is currently unknown.
