Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 have undoubtedly made significant improvements. However, their high price tags continue to be a concern. While rumors circulate about a potential Galaxy S23 FE phone, there is little indication that the Fold or Flip line will receive a “fan edition” model, according to a recent interview.
In a conversation with Tom’s Guide editor Kate Kozuck, Drew Blackard, Samsung’s Vice President of Mobile Product Marketing, discussed the company’s new foldable devices. The interview covers various topics such as hinge design, competition, and adoption challenges. However, the most interesting aspect of the interview is their discussion about the possibility of an FE model for the Fold or Flip.
Samsung’s FE line comprises affordable Android devices with flagship features. Although Blackard doesn’t explicitly mention an FE model for the Fold or Flip, he believes that prices will eventually decrease. However, he emphasizes that their current focus is on refining the user experience rather than affordability.
“Foldables will eventually become more affordable. This year, our main focus was addressing the pain points experienced by our current foldable users. For the Fold, we focused on making it slimmer, lighter, and more powerful. The Flex Window and cover screen experience drove the improvements for the Flip. Our aim is to continuously refine the user experience. As technology evolves, we hope to see further innovation and eventually lower price points in the future.”
According to Blackard, Samsung presently prioritizes refinement in order to achieve mainstream adoption of foldables. However, once they perfect the experience, they will consider expanding their product portfolio.
Therefore, if you were hoping for a more affordable Fold FE or Flip FE phone, it seems unlikely. Nonetheless, as technology becomes cheaper, prices should naturally decrease.
