Samsung Unveils its First OLED TV, Likely Manufactured by LG, with a Massive 83-Inch Display

Samsung has unveiled its new 83-inch S90C OLED TV, which features a screen size larger than any QD-OLED panels previously produced by Samsung Display. It is believed that this TV is the first Samsung OLED TV to use a panel produced by LG Display. The TV is equipped with a white OLED panel, also known as a WRGB OLED panel, from LG Display. Samsung’s James Fishler confirmed that the TV uses WOLED technology but did not specify the source. This announcement comes after Samsung and LG signed a deal to supply millions of panels in various sizes. It is interesting to see rivals in the tech space collaborating with each other. It remains to be seen if the use of different OLED panels will result in any significant picture quality differences in Samsung’s lineup. Rtings’ comparison suggests that WOLED panels may have a slight overall brightness advantage, while QD-OLED panels may benefit from brighter colors. Customers will be able to determine what type of OLED panel the TV uses through various identification methods. QD-OLED screens emit blue light through quantum dots to convert it into red and green, resulting in greater light energy efficiency and enhanced color reproduction even at peak brightness levels. While burn-in is still a possibility, QD-OLED panels may have a longer overall lifespan compared to existing OLED TVs. The 83-inch S90C model has all the features expected from a Samsung OLED TV, including Samsung’s Tizen operating system, a Neural Quantum Processor for upscaling content, Dolby Atmos, HDMI 2.1, and support for 120Hz 4K content. However, there is no mention of Dolby Vision HDR support. With this new TV, Samsung aims to provide consumers with the benefits of OLED on a larger screen.
