In 2019, Remy Boydell released the solo graphic novel debut of 920London from Image Comics.

Published in 2019, Remy Boydell’s 920London from Image Comics is a unique anthropomorphic furry tale set in 2005 just north of London, depicting the story of two emo slackers waiting for the end of the world while navigating a doomed romance. The graphic novel follows the main characters as they try to grow ‘shrooms before the world comes to an end. Fast forward four years, and now the story has inspired an emocore song with the same name, created by musicians Rook and ESPer99. The accompanying music video incorporates imagery, themes, and language from the comic, adding a more intense and vibrant touch.

“To me, 920London is a profound exploration of a specific kind of loneliness, a stubborn hope that somewhere out there the world will finally begin, despite knowing deep down that the gloomy skies will persist,” said Rook. “The book ignited my inspiration, leading me to write a song that captures the essence of denial present in its pages.” Boydell added, “920London has surprised me with its success, and I am incredibly grateful that people have embraced it. The song perfectly captures the emotions conveyed in the book, making it quite uncanny.”

Rook and ESPer99 were both members of the band rook&normie. ESPer99 is also associated with Sandaphon and watchusdiedotcom, while Rook is part of Black Dresses and Angel Electronics. Recently, Rook released the game Fallow.

Interestingly, 920London has not only spawned a song but has also inspired other artists. Elias And The Error’s “I Don’t Want The Drugs” features a simple video incorporating imagery from the graphic novel, further solidifying its influence. It is clear that 920London has made its mark and will continue to be a source of inspiration, perhaps even becoming the subject of academic papers in the future.

Remy Boydell is also known for their work in Brandon Graham’s The Island, as well as their illustrations for Chainmail Bikini and The Pervert, a graphic novel written by Michelle Perez.
