Mortal Kombat 1 Unveiled in Bone-Crushing Trailer, Set to Release on September 19th

Warner Bros. Games has officially announced the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 1, a reimagined and rebooted universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang. This exciting fighting game is scheduled for release on September 19th and will be available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch. Along with the announcement, a captivating cinematic trailer has been released, providing a glimpse of the new character designs, intense fatalities, and the introduction of new Kameo Fighters. Additionally, pre-orders for Mortal Kombat 1 will grant players access to the formidable sorcerer, Shang Tsung, and exclusive beta access in August for PS5 and Xbox Series S/X players. This exciting news comes after the confirmation of the game, Mortal Kombat 12, during Warner Bros. Discovery’s quarterly earnings call, which was teased by franchise creator Ed Boon on his Twitter account.

The Mortal Kombat 1 trailer begins with a powerful voiceover from Liu Kang exclaiming, “It is time!” He introduces the audience to the new realm he has created, a serene and idyllic paradise where Kung Lau can be seen working as a humble farmer with his distinctive razor-brimmed hat. Meanwhile, we see Kitana wielding her steel fan, ruling over Outworld with her loyal retainer and sister-clone, Mileena. Although the trailer does not explicitly explain what caused this world reset, we can speculate that it is a result of the multiple endings in Mortal Kombat 11, one of which led to a new and improved timeline, undoing Kronika’s errors. By the end of Mortal Kombat 11, Liu Kang had ascended to godhood, and the effects of this transformation appear to carry over into Mortal Kombat 1.

The calm atmosphere depicted in the Mortal Kombat 1 trailer is quickly shattered when Scorpion and Sub-Zero stumble upon a blood-red eclipse on the horizon, reminiscent of those found in Berserk and Dark Souls 3. As Liu Kang descends from the sky, he declares, “For the storm is brewing,” indicating that he aims to aid our heroes in a new battle. This alludes to the Story Mode, which promises unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories for the iconic fighters. According to the Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ page, a constant internet connection is not required to play the game, although certain modes and features will necessitate it. It is hoped that the story mode remains unaffected by this requirement.

Shang Tsung emerges as the primary antagonist in Mortal Kombat 1, stepping through a portal while our heroes prepare for their newest threat. The trailer showcases some of his gruesome Fatality animations, including throat-slitting, breaking Mileena’s neck, curb-stomping Sub-Zero, and inserting his thumbs into Kitana’s eye sockets. The game introduces the Kameo Fighters as a new feature, offering a unique roster of partner characters who provide assistance during matches with team-up combos. These fighters are chosen separately from the main roster, which includes Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage.

The Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ page also outlines the pricing details for the game. The Standard Edition will cost $69.99 SRP (approximately Rs. 5,792) for both physical and digital copies across all platforms. Regional pricing may vary. The Premium Edition, priced at $109.99 SRP (Rs. 9,102), grants players early access to DLC characters, in-game currency, and a Kombat Pack featuring additional characters. For collectors, the Kollector’s Edition will be available at select retailers for $249.99 SRP (about Rs. 20,691) and includes a 16.5-inch Liu Kang sculpture, art prints, a steel case, and all the bonuses from the Premium Edition. It should be noted that the Kollector’s Edition is exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Additionally, owners of the Premium and Kollector’s Editions will gain early access to Mortal Kombat 1 from September 14th.

Mark your calendars for the highly anticipated release of Mortal Kombat 1 on September 19th, available on PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
