Reviewing Forspoken: The Magic is Missing

Major video games, like any other mass-market products in these times, suffer from a lack of innovation. A quick look at the significant releases in recent years reveals an overwhelming number of sequels, remakes, and remasters. The true source of innovation and art in the gaming industry lies with smaller, independent games, with a few exceptions. Big publishers and developers often have to play it safe due to the high stakes involved. Creating a new intellectual property without a recognizable name comes with significant risks.

Forspoken, released on January 24 for PlayStation 5 and PC, breaks the mold. It is both a completely new IP and familiar territory. Developed by Luminous Productions, a subsidiary of Square Enix, Forspoken is an open-world action RPG with a vast map filled with points of interest. While this may seem familiar, the game sets itself apart with its flashy combat and frenetic traversal.

The protagonist of Forspoken, Frey, gains elemental powers that allow her to perform incredible feats of magic. With these abilities, she can navigate the world with incredible speed and take on various enemies. The magic combat system, reminiscent of Final Fantasy, offers a wide range of abilities that grow more complex as you progress through the game.

While the gameplay of Forspoken is captivating, the same cannot be said for its story. It follows the typical narrative of a troubled underdog, Frey, who is transported to a mystical realm called Athia. With the help of a magical companion named Cuff, Frey embarks on a quest to restore Athia to its former glory. The dialogue between Frey and Cuff, intended to be amusing, becomes tiresome with its constant attempts at quirkiness.

Despite its lackluster story, Forspoken excels in its combat and traversal mechanics. The magic combat system offers a variety of spells and abilities, while the traversal aspect requires strategic thinking and precise movements. However, the enemy variety is lacking, and combat rarely poses a significant challenge.

In conclusion, while Forspoken may not revolutionize the gaming industry, it offers an enjoyable experience with its gameplay mechanics. Its innovation lies in its magic combat and traversal, while its story falls short of expectations. Nonetheless, it is a step towards breaking free from the conservatism that plagues major video games.
