As someone who is a fan of horror titles, it’s no surprise that I have a strong affinity for shooters and horror games. When I heard about Trepang2, the supposed spiritual successor to the FEAR series, I was immediately curious. This game promised to combine the best elements of terror and shooting, creating a unique and thrilling experience that few developers have attempted.

Trepang2 heavily focuses on action, allowing players to use the “Focus” ability to slow down time and take precise shots at waves of enemies. While the action-packed gameplay shown in the trailers looked promising, what intrigued me even more were the game’s storytelling and horror elements. It reminded me of games like Resident Evil 4 Remake and Dead Space, which seamlessly blend horror and action. However, I did find that at times, these two genres clashed and resulted in a somewhat underwhelming experience.

That being said, when you embrace either the horror or the action side of the game (especially with the cheats available in the post-game), you can truly appreciate the mindless fun that Trepang2 offers. The story itself is basic, as you play as a soldier who wakes up in an unknown compound where everyone wants to kill you. Through your journey, you discover that you are Subject 106, a super soldier with optical camo and bullet time abilities, created by the Horizon Corporation. It soon becomes evident that this corporation’s experiments are unethical, and you join the TF22 forces to take them down.

One of the highlights of Trepang2 is its impressive graphics. The game boasts a flashy style and detailed visuals, with explosions happening all around without sacrificing a high frame rate of 120FPS. It’s remarkable to see how much detail and action the game can deliver compared to other titles like Dead Space.

The atmosphere in Trepang2 is also well-crafted. The game knows when to build up suspense as you explore desolate corridors, and it knows when to amp up the action as you unleash your firepower on hordes of armed troops.

In terms of gameplay, Trepang2 follows the typical controls of a shooter, with WASD movement, grenades, and mouse controls. The game adds the Q and E keys for Focus and Cloak, respectively. Cloaking makes you invisible for a short period, allowing you to surprise enemies or find a safe position. Focus, on the other hand, slows down time, giving you better accuracy and a slight advantage in movement. The game also includes a stamina meter that depletes as you sprint or slide, which is useful for staggering enemies or breaking through riot shields. Both Focus and stamina recharge with each kill, encouraging players to be aggressive and take down enemies quickly.

The variety of weapons in Trepang2 is another standout feature. From sniper rifles to shotguns and SMGs, players have access to a wide range of firearms. The customization feature adds depth to the gunplay, allowing players to modify weapons to their preference. For example, sacrificing overall damage for incendiary effects on shotguns adds a thrilling element to taking down enemies. Experimenting with different combinations of weapons and customizations is recommended, especially on higher difficulties where quick kills are essential.

While the enemy variety in Trepang2 may not be extensive, the challenge lies in defeating enemies while taking minimal damage. The AI can pack a punch with their weapon choices and come in different difficulty levels, requiring strategic gameplay to succeed.

In addition to the fast-paced action, Trepang2 includes sparse but exceptional horror segments that outshine many other games in the genre. These sequences are organic and build up tension effectively, surpassing the horror elements of FEAR 2. However, I was disappointed to find that these horror moments were not as abundant as the action set pieces.

Overall, Trepang2 is a must-play for shooter enthusiasts looking for a spine-tingling experience and a classic arena shooter style. While it may not appeal as much to non-shooter fans or those seeking a horror experience similar to the FEAR franchise, the game offers unique sequences, challenging gameplay, and a captivating tone that becomes even more enjoyable with cheats enabled.
