Review of Moto Razr+: A New Contender for Samsung’s Flip Foldables

Motorola is clearly taking notes from Samsung’s Z Flip series when designing its newest foldable phone, the Moto Razr+. One of the main improvements over the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the size of the external display. While the Z Flip 4’s Cover Display is cramped and limited, the Razr+ offers a larger 3.6-inch screen when closed.

The Razr+ runs on full Android with some tweaks, and using the outer display gives a nostalgic and pager-like experience. Priced at $999, this phone appeals to both old souls and early adopters.

The fourth-generation Razr+ has two notable differences from its predecessors. First, it has a larger display. Second, it does not have the iconic original Razr’s bottom chin, which may disappoint those seeking nostalgia.

When folded, the Razr+ has a squat square shape, resembling a pager, and its matte back gives it a premium feel. Only the Viva Magenta model comes with a vegan leather back, while the blue and black models use Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and rear.

Compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the folded Razr+ is thinner and fits comfortably in the hand. It has a slightly less rigid hinge, allowing it to open all the way when pushed past 150 degrees. The Razr+ weighs 188.5 grams and is lighter than the iPhone 14 Plus and Galaxy S23 Plus.

Both the Moto Razr+ and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are water-resistant, with the Razr+ meeting IP52 standards and the Flip 4 achieving IPX8.

The Moto Razr+’s larger pOLED panel offers a more full-fledged Android experience compared to Samsung’s limited notification widget. The Razr+ allows for swiping gestures to access quick settings toggles, open apps, and go back. The Z Flip 4, on the other hand, only lets you swipe sideways to rotate through widgets and shows a single row of toggles when dragged down from the top.

The home screen on the Razr+ is designed to display the clock, date, weather info, and six shortcut buttons that lead to different panels. The widgets, such as an app launcher, dialer, calendar, games, media controls, steps tracker, and news headlines, are similar to Samsung’s offerings but displayed more efficiently due to the larger screen size.

One standout feature of the Razr+ is its ability to run any Android app on the external screen, thanks to its continuity feature. This allows users to seamlessly switch between the main display and the exterior display, even keeping apps running on the small screen.

The larger external screen of the Razr+ also makes it more useful as a viewfinder for the rear cameras, compared to the Z Flip 4. Users can easily preview and frame their shots using the exterior cameras, eliminating guesswork.

Overall, the Moto Razr+ offers a compelling foldable phone option with a larger external display, full Android experience, and improved camera capabilities compared to its competitors.
