Review of Episode 7, Season 5 of ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’: Prevalence of Disappointing Horses

Before the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which relied on flashforwards to convey future events instead of focusing on the present, the show occasionally used flashbacks to help fill in the gaps. These flashbacks focused on the early days of Midge and Joel’s relationship and were connected to the larger themes of each episode. However, the flashforwards in Season 5 fail to deliver a cohesive story and hinder the overall enjoyment of the season. The Episode 7 subplot explores Abe’s desire for his grandchildren to be geniuses, highlighting the idea that emotionally troubled individuals are hidden geniuses, while happy individuals are simple. Midge’s plotline continues to rely on her being a woman in a man’s world, with men constantly wrecking her plans. The flashforwards make it difficult to emotionally invest in her struggles. Additionally, irrelevant musicals and in-world television episodes waste valuable time. Overall, the final season has glimpses of what made the show great, but the heavy-handed flashforwards and repetitive plotlines hinder its success.
