Report: Twitter Declines Payment for Google Cloud Costs Ahead of Contract Renewal

According to a report from Platformer, Twitter is refusing to pay its Google Cloud bills as its contract comes up for renewal this month. This move could potentially lead to Twitter’s trust and safety teams being severely impacted. Prior to Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter last year, the social media platform had signed a multi-year contract with Google aimed at fighting spam and protecting accounts. While the Platformer report did not provide details on how this dispute could impact Twitter’s trust and safety teams, The Information has reported that Twitter has been trying to renegotiate its contract with Google since at least March. Twitter currently hosts some services on its servers and others on the cloud platforms of Amazon and Google.

In March, Amazon warned Twitter that it would withhold advertising payments due to unpaid bills for cloud computing services provided by Amazon Web Services. Since the acquisition by Elon Musk, Twitter has implemented cost-cutting measures, leading to thousands of layoffs. Musk has reportedly ordered the company to cut infrastructure costs, such as spending on cloud services, by $1 billion.

Twitter has not yet responded to inquiries about this matter. Meanwhile, the resignation of Twitter’s Head of Trust and Safety, Ella Irwin, has sparked further concerns about the company’s ability to address harmful content. Irwin, who took over from previous head Yoel Roth in November, oversaw content moderation at Twitter. AJ Brown, Twitter’s Head of Brand Safety and Ad Quality also decided to leave the company a day later.

Moving on to other developments, Apple recently unveiled its first mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, at its annual developer conference. The event also introduced new Mac models and upcoming software updates. To learn more about these announcements, you can listen to Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast, available on major platforms like Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, and Amazon Music.
