Report: Microsoft Plans to Launch Xbox Games and Third-Party Content App Store on iOS in 2022

Microsoft is planning to launch its app store on the iPhone and iPad by 2024. The European Union’s Digital Markets Act, set to make major changes in March 2024, will allow other app and game developers to introduce their own stores on iOS and iPadOS. Microsoft aims to be among the first to release its store for Xbox apps and games after the new rules come into effect.

According to a report by the Financial Times, Microsoft’s gaming chief Phil Spencer announced the company’s intention to open its own app store for both iOS and Android. The store is expected to go live in March 2024, shortly after Microsoft finalizes its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $69 billion (roughly Rs. 5,68,094 crore).

Microsoft aims to provide the Xbox experience and its associated content across screens, particularly on mobile devices. Currently, Microsoft does not have this capability on mobile, but the company plans to change that in the near future.

Although Microsoft is facing antitrust regulators over concerns about its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Spencer believes this deal could offer smartphone players more options, as smartphones are currently the most popular gaming platform.

The Microsoft app store could also help the company expand its cloud gaming service, which is currently limited on iOS. While Android users have a dedicated app, iPhone users have to access it through a web browser. Having an app would allow Microsoft to list all the games individually and bypass Apple’s App Store rules.
