Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Elections had highlighted the lack of internet connectivity in eight villages of three tehsils, forcing Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district collector Dilip Swami to communicate with telecom authorities and urge them to do the needful allowing swift communication between the city headquarters and each polling booth in his jurisdiction.Lack of internet services delayed collection of polling data which had to be sent to the headquarters hourly.The election department said there was no internet connectivity in six villages of Phulambri tehsil and one village each of Kannad and Gangapur tehsils. Officials found that locals either walked to nearby villages, highways or even climbed neighbouring hills for reception.District administration officials acknowledged that affected villagers had been demanding telecom and internet connectivity, but in vain. Swami said, “We have written to telecom authorities telling them to install devices to enhance internet connectivity at the said locations.”An official from the election department told TOI, “The biggest challenge is in collecting polling figures on the day of voting. Communication dark spots have always been a challenge in different parts of the country.” Union minister of state for communications Devusinh Chauhan had said during the Parliament session in 2023 that till March 2022, 38,901 villages did not have telecom and mobile internet services.
