Report: Google delays launch of fully custom smartphone chipset until 2025

With the release of the Pixel 6 series, Google implemented a significant shift in its product strategy. The company collaborated with Samsung to create a custom chip for its smartphones. The Pixel 7 series, which includes Google’s latest tablet and foldable smartphone, features the second iteration of this System on a Chip (SoC). Initially, there were rumors that Google planned to introduce a fully custom chip for the Pixel phones in 2024. However, according to a report, these plans have been delayed until 2025.

According to The Information’s report, Google has ambitious plans to develop its own chips for the Pixel phones. However, the company has faced setbacks in achieving this goal. The first fully customized chip, internally known as “Redondo,” was supposed to be released next year, replacing the semi-custom chips designed in collaboration with Samsung. Instead, Google will continue its partnership with Samsung for another year and introduce a fully custom design called “Laguna.”

In a shift from Samsung, Google is reportedly planning to switch to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for chip production. TSMC, known for serving major customers like Apple and Nvidia, will manufacture the chips known as “Tensor.”

The Laguna chip will be based on TSMC’s 3-nanometer manufacturing process, which is considered the most advanced in the world.

The Google Tensor SoCs have not been marketed as the “most powerful,” but rather emphasize their capabilities in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Google intended for these SoCs to deliver ML and AI experiences that surpass those provided by third-party chips. However, a review of the Pixel 7 Pro revealed heating issues, with the device becoming warm after moderate gaming sessions.

In conclusion, Google’s plans to develop its own custom chips for the Pixel phones have experienced delays. The company aims to introduce a fully custom chip in 2025, collaborating with TSMC for production. The Google Tensor SoCs prioritize ML and AI experiences but have faced criticism for heating issues.
