This guide will cover the best skills, weapon loadout, and playstyles associated with The Handler. Before long, players and their companions will quickly fly through every boss fight—optional or otherwise.

Updated by Brandon Morgan on August 17, 2023: We’ve included additional information on choosing a secondary archetype that works well with The Handler, specifically while playing cooperatively with other players.

Who Is The Handler?

The Handler is one of the starting archetypes available in Remnant 2 and the only one to feature a companion. As such, most of the class’ abilities revolve around the canine companion, including attack and defend commands, healing capabilities, and more. Overall, The Handler is a support class and can assist the entire team with buffs, but it works well solo, all thanks to the companion that can resurrect downed players.

When starting as The Handler, players will automatically receive the following items:

  • Trainer Cap
  • Trainer Clothes
  • Trainer Workboots
  • Trainer Bracer
  • Blackmaw AR-47
  • Rusted Claws
  • Tech 22

These fantastic starting weapons and armor should last players well into mid-game.

Remnant 2 Announced At The Game Awards

In Remnant 2, players are capable of taking on two archetypes. There is the Prime Archetype, which everyone selects after the prologue and upon arriving at Ward 13, and then the Secondary Archetype, which comes later in the game. It’s a helpful system that allows for greater build variety and is especially useful for solo players dealing with mobs and boss fights without additional help.

For The Handler, it’s recommended that players take on a damage-dealing archetype when playing solo. With The Handler’s many perks focused on buffs and healing via the companion, staying alive while playing alone proves less challenging than it does with other archetypes. But something like the Gunslinger or Challenger works well, as they do quite a bit of damage independently.

But when playing in a group setting, as Remnant 2 is designed for, The Handler does quite well with the Medic archetype as his second. The Medic is a support-type class that will heal and improve survivability for the entire group, not just the player, and those buffs go a long way in keeping the whole group in the fight. While running the Medic, it’s recommended that players select the Triage trait and focus skill points on it, as it boosts the healing granted by weapon mods. As for skills, players will use Healing Shield, Wellspring, and Redemption. These provide significant buffs, healing energy in an area-of-effect arc around the player, and shields to keep everyone alive.

However, the thing about a secondary archetype is that no matter the first archetype’s level, the secondary will always begin at level one. It’s a bit of a grind but well worth the trouble for the increased damage output and survivability.
