Ranking the Available Outfits in Final Fantasy 16

When immersing yourself in the captivating world of Final Fantasy 16, you may find yourself contemplating the various outfits that Clive can don. Customizing and changing outfits is always an enjoyable activity for RPG enthusiasts. However, much like previous installments in the Final Fantasy franchise, Clive’s wardrobe options are limited. Nevertheless, each outfit he wears represents a different version of himself as he grows and matures, serving as a helpful tool to track his journey through the time skips.

Throughout the game, you will encounter Clive donning three distinctive outfits, each significant to a particular period in his life. These outfits accurately reflect Clive’s circumstances during the time he wears them. The outfit he wore as a young child depicts his duty as a Shield and symbolizes his youthful innocence. The attire he dons as a slave, known as a Bearer, signifies the period in his life where he lacked personal agency. Lastly, the garment he wears that belonged to his father represents a grown and self-accepting Clive, ready to embrace his destiny.

Updated by Erin Rice on July 18, 2023: This update includes pertinent information about each outfit Clive will wear during his journey, accompanied by in-text links to further enhance players’ access to additional guide resources.

Outfit 3: Bearer Clive
This is the initial ensemble fans will encounter Clive in throughout the game’s events. It is a soldier’s uniform worn by individuals hailing from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. As a Bearer, Clive was compelled to wear this garb due to his mother branding him as such after the Phoenix Gate incident. She foresaw his immense value to the Empire and allowed him to live, under the condition that he served in their army. During this period, Clive was known as Wyvern, and people quickly judged him based on his attire, assuming he hailed from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. Though this outfit is practical for his position, it lacks flair and pales in comparison to the cool outfits worn by other soldiers in the army.

Outfit 2: Young Clive
Clive is frequently seen donning this attire, which he wore during his tenure as a Shield of Rosaria. Despite not being the Dominant of the Phoenix, his father held high regard for his performance, as Clive possessed the Blessing of the Phoenix. Assigned as his brother Joshua’s Shield, Clive garnered admiration from fellow soldiers and companions. This outfit befits the son of an Archduke, boasting a regal appearance. However, its impracticality becomes apparent during Clive’s battles against the Beastmen and the events at Phoenix Gate. While visually appealing, it offers minimal protection, rendering it ill-suited for combat. This outfit holds deep significance as Clive experiences flashbacks throughout the game, serving as a symbol of his childhood.

Outfit 1: Clive’s Father’s Attire
Undoubtedly the standout among the three outfits, Clive acquires this garb from Hannah Murdock, wife of Lord Murdock, during present-day events. Hannah reveals that these clothes originally belonged to Clive’s father, Elwin, long before he ascended to the Rosaria throne. Elwin was close friends with the Murdocks and left his clothes behind, which Hannah could never bear to part with, even after losing her husband and best friend that tragic day at Phoenix Gate. Contrary to her belief that both Clive and Joshua perished, she preserved the clothes. Clive wears this outfit from the moment he arrives in Eastpool and encounters Hannah Murdock until the game’s conclusion. Immediately after acquiring these clothing, Clive and Jill embark on a journey to Phoenix Gate, where Clive confronts his past, battling shadow versions of himself and Ifrit. The attire symbolizes Clive’s acceptance of his past, his embrace of his true self, and his desire to follow in his father’s footsteps. It is the most significant outfit due to its symbolic connotations and visually appealing design.

Although players have the freedom to alter Clive’s belts, vambraces, and accessories, his overall appearance remains unchanged in these outfits.
