Cst. Cory Booth, school resource officer with the Lloydminster RCMP shares about how parents can get notifications on their phones.
“It will alert parents of any keywords that your child might be typing or searching on the internet, and other resources if your child is being targeted on the internet. Different resources if you’re being bullied on the internet or being sex-torted, along with places that you can get a hold of to help you get these sites removed.”
Another strategy officers share is to say to kids, this is to protect us against scammers.
“It’s good that we talk with our kids about scammers and be open. Also, have our kids tell us if they are getting scammed. The last thing that kids want is to be scammed out of money, and we see that a lot.”
Booth recommends cbyertip.ca as one of the best sites he has come across that offers parents more information and resources.
“Telus has a good one. All your internet providers have their own that are going to send alerts. Bark is another good one that will send alerts straight to the parents, so they will get the notification on their cell phone when their child is searching for something that they shouldn’t,” says the school resource officer.
