Producer of ‘Transformers’ Discusses Michael Bay’s Role in ‘Rise of the Beasts’

The Transformers franchise, which debuted in 2007, has become synonymous with director Michael Bay. After helming five films in the series, Bay acted as a producer in Bumblebee and repeats the role in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. However, the extent to which he gets involved in production, particularly in directing tips, remains unknown. According to Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer of the Transformers movie series, in an interview with Collider, Bay has a significant influence in the making of the new installment, stating that “Bay obviously cares very much about it and is invested in our success,” and acknowledging that Bay’s DNA is all over the franchise.

Moreover, Bonaventura says that “this is sort of a cross-pollination of DNA now, right? With [new director Steven Caple Jr.’s] DNA and Michael’s…” and the results are spectacular. Bay offers insight into the franchise working experience, giving Steven tips on what went wrong and right in the past, and discusses his vision of the project. In his own words, Bay shared how he helped on the film as a producer, saying, “I talked to the different teams, and the head animators and lighters and whatnot, giving them tips, and they asked a lot of questions. So, it’s a machine. It’s a lot of people, and it’s a mathematical machine. You’ve got to keep the machine moving, you know?”

According to Bay, he watched cuts of the movie and gave constructive feedback, which indicates that the former director is “definitely a part of all this.” Changing directors is always a good thing for any long-running franchise, as new voices can bring ideas to the table and subvert what was set up by previous filmmakers. Travis Knight successfully made Bumblebee one of the highest-rated entries in the Transformers franchise, and newcomer Steven Caple Jr. is poised to do the same. He directed Creed II, which featured some fistfights, and episodes of Grown-ish and is sure to bring some style to the movies.

The human characters in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts are led by Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, while the Transformers welcome the Maximals, who disguise themselves as animals instead of cars, and are voiced by an all-star cast. The voice cast for these beasts includes Michelle Yeoh and Ron Pearlman, and they are joined by fellow voice actors Peter Dinklage, John DiMaggio, and Peter Cullen. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts premieres in theaters this Friday, June 9.
