Doctors are continuously investigating the phenomenon of long Covid, which continues to affect hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of individuals who contracted the virus during the pandemic. The persistent symptoms often result in patients enduring considerable suffering, with limited treatment options available. However, there may be a glimmer of hope: researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the Allen Institute have made a breakthrough discovery, suggesting that an overactive inflammatory response may be at the root of long Covid. This finding builds upon previous research that also indicated a connection between inflammation and long Covid. The type of inflammation observed is similar to that seen in rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting that treatments used for this condition might be beneficial for long Covid patients experiencing this type of inflammation.

According to Fred Hutchinson infectious disease director Julie McElrath, “We hope these findings provide insights into long Covid that may guide future therapeutic approaches.”
