Possible Second Chance to Witness the Northern Lights Tonight in Select U.S. Regions

Topline

Tonight, Americans in parts of the Northern U.S. may have the opportunity to witness the magical display of the northern lights. This comes after last week’s predictions of the aurora borealis failed to materialize for more than a dozen states.

Key Facts

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), viewers in the Northeast, northern and central Great Plains, and northern Rockies may witness the northern lights from Wednesday night until Thursday morning.

Space weather physicist Tamitha Skov mentioned on Twitter that the natural phenomena could be observed in mid-latitudes starting early Thursday. She cited the NOAA and noted the likelihood of a minor to moderate geomagnetic storm.

Contrary to predictions, NASA forecasted a G3-level storm on Wednesday, which is used to describe strong storms.

In an earlier post, Skov stated that the forecast depends on several factors, including storm magnetic orientation, speed, and the direct impact on Earth.

What To Watch For

Experts predict that sightings of the northern lights will continue to increase in the coming years due to a “solar maximum” expected to occur in 2025.

Key Background

The northern lights, typically visible around the north and south poles, are a result of electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with atoms of gas in the Earth’s atmosphere. Last week, the forecast anticipated the lights to be visible in several states, but those predictions were later retracted.
