Possible revision: Appointment-only sales for Apple’s Vision Pro headset launch anticipated

Apple is gearing up to release its Vision Pro headset, which comes with a hefty price tag of $3,500. To ensure a smooth and successful launch, Apple plans to gradually introduce the headset to the US market, starting with designated Apple Store areas where customers can schedule appointments for demos. This strategic approach aligns with the “niche and complex nature” of the mixed reality headset, similar to how Apple handled the release of the Apple Watch back in 2015.

To try and purchase the Vision Pro, customers will need to book appointments, just as they did for the Apple Watch. Additionally, Apple will request potential buyers to provide their eyeglass prescriptions. In-store areas will be specifically designated for demo units of the Vision Pro, complete with seating and tools to customize accessories for a perfect fit.

The primary goal behind these measures is to ensure that customers walk away with a headset that fits them properly and provides a clear view. Apple has even developed an iPhone app and physical device that scans your head to guarantee a tight fit, blocking out unwanted light. Moreover, Apple may be working on an additional strap to enhance comfort for users with smaller heads.

Initially, demo spaces for the Vision Pro will only be available in major US markets such as New York and Los Angeles, with plans to expand across the entire US. The headset is expected to hit other countries by the end of 2024, starting with the UK and Canada, followed by Europe and Asia shortly after.

The Vision Pro holds significant importance for Apple, representing one of its most groundbreaking products in years. It is also one of the most intricate devices the company has ever created. Furthermore, the Vision Pro comes with a higher price point compared to other consumer VR headsets. Apple undoubtedly hopes that the Vision Pro will ignite mainstream consumers’ excitement for mixed reality.

Early reviews of the device have been positive, with testers lauding its immersive experience, sharp displays for reading text on websites, and user-friendly gesture-based interface. However, concerns have also been raised about the isolating aspect of using mixed reality headsets, particularly for socially-oriented activities like watching movies.

It is worth noting that Apple has faced manufacturing obstacles, which have impacted its projected sales figures. Initially, the company expected to sell 900,000 units of the Vision Pro in its first year. However, due to the challenges with the small and expensive OLED displays, that target has been significantly reduced to 400,000 units, according to a recent report by the Financial Times.
