‘Planet Of Lana’ Finds Xbox Game Pass to be “Essential”

Developer Wishfully and publisher Thunderful have expressed their satisfaction with the decision to release their platformer game, Planet Of Lana, as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. The game, which launched on Xbox and PC on May 23, was made available on Xbox’s Game Pass subscription service from the start.

While there may be concerns about the impact of Game Pass on game sales, Adam Stjärnljus, the creative director of Planet Of Lana and co-founder of Wishfully, believes it was the right choice. He explains, “For us at Wishfully, being an indie studio releasing our first game, it has been invaluable. It lowers the entry bar for players to discover and try our game, and has the potential to attract players who wouldn’t typically gravitate towards the puzzle platformer genre. We are also extremely pleased with our collaboration with Xbox and Microsoft, which has provided significant support for Planet of Lana over the years.”

The chief growth officer of Thunderful, Agostino Simonetta, shares Stjärnljus’s sentiment. He explains that launching Planet Of Lana on Game Pass allows it to be easily discovered by players, given its status as a highly anticipated new game. Thunderful previously experienced the positive effects of Game Pass with the publication of The Gunk in 2022, and therefore felt confident in working with Game Pass. Simonetta emphasizes the advantages that Game Pass offers to publishers collaborating with smaller studios, such as the potential to reach millions of players and enhance discoverability.

Stjärnljus also expresses his gratitude for the positive reception of Planet Of Lana, stating that it has exceeded their expectations, particularly as it is their debut game. He adds, “This has been crucial for us in establishing our studio’s reputation and setting a high standard for future games from Wishfully. The entire team is excited to learn from this experience and continue to grow and evolve, creating even better games in the future.”

It is worth noting that Studio Ghibli’s film, Spirited Away, served as inspiration for Planet Of Lana.

In other gaming news, Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard is ongoing, despite legal challenges in the U.S. and UK. Sony’s PlayStation head, Jim Ryan, recently explained that they could not risk sharing PS6 details with Activision Blizzard if the acquisition were approved.
