Oscar-Winner Chloé Zhao Directs Horrifying Live-Action Trailer for Diablo IV

Diablo IV has released a captivating gothic horror-themed live-action trailer ahead of its highly anticipated launch on June 6. Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao (known for her work on “Nomadland”) and co-directed by Kiku Ohe, the trailer titled ‘Saviors Wanted’ effectively portrays the fear and conflict that plague the lands of Sanctuary. Set in a twisted realm teeming with monsters, the High Heavens and Burning Hells clash in destructive battles, leaving the inhabitants in a state of turmoil. With Diablo 4 recently achieving gold status, it indicates that the game is ready for shipment. Additionally, a Server Slam open beta event took place recently, where the drops of Legendary loot were adjusted to align with the day one version.

The live-action trailer for Diablo IV takes viewers on a tragic journey, beginning with a poignant scene of an aged man mourning over the corpses of horses in the icy tundras of Sanctuary. His heartfelt plea to save their lands from ruin is directed towards the players, as he pleads, “Whatever you can do. We beg you.” The trailer intercuts between the desperate cries for help from other unfortunate souls and epic shots of our heroes bravely facing hordes of demons. These heroes represent the five classes in Diablo IV — Barbarian, Sorcerer, Druid, Rogue, and the new Necromancer, who possesses the ability to summon and control corpses. The trailer climaxes with an intense battle between Lilith, the Queen of the Succubi, and her archenemy, angel Inarius, as they vie for control of Sanctuary.

Zhao expresses her excitement in collaborating with Blizzard, stating, “Working with Blizzard, we had the wonderful opportunity to bring the dark, thrilling, and imaginative world of Diablo IV to life. Diablo fans are deeply passionate, with many having been devoted to the game for over two decades. We aim to honor the rich lore and visceral world-building of the game while evoking the strong emotions that players experience while immersing themselves in the game.” Zhao, known for directing the critically acclaimed “Nomadland,” which earned her an Oscar, is also involved in upcoming projects such as Marvel’s “Eternals” and an adaptation of “Hamnet,” a story about William Shakespeare’s wife.

Last month, Blizzard Entertainment unveiled the endgame progression of Diablo 4, emphasizing its ability to captivate players for hundreds of hours after completing the main story. The Capstone Dungeon allows for repeated runs at increasing difficulties, providing an opportunity to collect a vast array of loot and further enhance character strength. Nightmare Dungeons also make a return, featuring over 120 dungeons in Sanctuary that can be transformed into harsher playfields. These dungeons can be activated by discovering a Nightmare Sigil, which introduces difficult objectives, increased enemy count, and portals that transport monsters from other realms. Players should be prepared, as they have no control over when these portals open.

Diablo IV is set to release on June 6 on various platforms including PC (via Battle.net), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. Early access for Deluxe and Ultimate edition pre-orders will begin on June 2 in India and June 1 in the US.
