DreamWorks Animation has given audiences a sneak peek at its latest upcoming release, Orion and the Dark. Written by the acclaimed screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, the film is set to debut on Netflix in 2024, adapted from Emma Yarlett’s 2014 picture book of the same name. Orion and the Dark will follow the story of young schoolboy Orion, played by Jacob Tremblay, who harbors a range of anxieties and fears, including a fear of the dark, bees, dogs, cellphones, and murder clowns. When the embodiment of the darkness visits him one night, played by Paul Walter Hauser, Orion is taken on a global adventure to prove that there is nothing to be afraid of in the dark.
The film’s first image depicts the stark contrast between the enormous, robed Dark and the diminutive Orion, both silhouetted against a full moon as they hover above a city at night. Other images released by Netflix show Orion playing with a phone and sitting in bed with Dark. Kaufman is renowned for his mind-bending, metafictional screenplays, having written and directed a series of critically acclaimed films, including Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Orion and the Dark will be directed by Sean Charmatz, who has previously worked on The Lego Movie 2, Trolls World Tour, and both Angry Birds movies, and directed the TV special Trolls Holiday in Harmony. The film will be produced by Peter McCown (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous), with Walt Dohrn (Spongebob Squarepants) and Bonnie Arnold (How to Train Your Dragon) serving as executive producers.
