Opportunities to Work for and Potentially Betray Jabba the Hutt in Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft Massive developers and LucasFilm collaborators revealed exciting new details about Star Wars: Outlaws at San Diego Comic-Con. They discussed two locations in the game: the new moon Toshara and Tatooine. Notably, players will have the opportunity to work for or betray Jabba the Hutt.

Director Julian Gerighty described Toshara as being inspired by the eastern African savannah and tailored to suit the speeder of the protagonist Kay Vess. The team even visited Tanzania for inspiration, resulting in vast open plains that evoke a sense of alienness while still feeling familiar.

“We start off with a biome, in this case, southeast African biomes as an inspiration, and then you put a twist on it to make it feel a little bit alien,” Gerighty explained. “That’s what brings the really alien nature to it. Familiar but fresh.”

Lucasfilm’s Matt Martin further elaborated on their design philosophy, mentioning the “80/20” rule of creating locations that are 80% familiar and 20% fantastical. In the case of Toshara, the familiar aspect is the east African inspiration, while the giant crystal outcroppings and the city carved into a mountain provide the fantastical elements.

During the SDCC panel, Tatooine was also discussed, highlighting its similar landscape with vast and barren expanses. However, the team emphasized that their aim was not to recreate Tatooine but to create a unique location with its own rich history.

As Gerighty explained, “Lucasfilm Games encouraged us to create our own locations, and Toshara was born out of that challenge. How would Massive build that open world? That hive of scum and villainy.”

Toshara has been designed to cater to the “scoundrel” fantasy that Massive is building around Kay, with its city carved into a rock and its surrounding plains connected through wind power.

Of course, the game will also feature a visit to Tatooine, specifically to Mos Eisley and its infamous watering hole. This presents an opportunity for players to explore the detailed nooks and crannies inspired by the Lucasfilm archives. The concept of virtual tourism is an important aspect of the game, allowing players to experience the distances between moisture farms and the cantina.

Jabba’s palace will also play a significant role, with players undertaking missions for the Hutt himself and navigating the criminal underworld centered around him. Interestingly, players have the option to not only work for Jabba but also to betray him, leading to unique consequences.

Although no new gameplay or trailers were shown during the panel, fans eagerly anticipate more updates. Star Wars: Outlaws is set to release in 2024.
