Denmark wants to establish itself as a global innovation hub

Denmark’s Novo Holdings is to invest DKK1.4bn (€188m) in quantum computing research.

In a statement, it said quantum technologies are on ‘a steep development trajectory’, especially in the Nordics, providing the potential for Denmark to establish itself as a global innovation hub.

Søren Møller, Managing Partner, Seed Investments at Novo Holdings, said, “Quantum technology is a disruptive and transformative field that can revolutionise various sectors and global challenges … our ultimate goal is to create, grow and develop strong quantum technology companies in the Nordics.”

The Danish government has committed DKK1.2bn (€160m) to quantum technology research which combined with the grants from the Novo Nordisk Foundation and other contributors, make Denmark’s per capita investments in quantum technology ‘the highest in the world today’.

Quantum computing is making significant strides in various sectors, including energy, providing insights for material development, supply chain optimisation, gas leak detection and environmental monitoring.

Moreover, there are a wide variety of cooling solutions for quantum computing, ranging from lab-size dilution refrigerators to small 4K table-top systems.

As with AI however, there are ongoing concerns over how the technology could be used if it got into the wrong hands. The UK Government recently introduced Schedule 3 amendments relating to goods, software and technology as it strengthened export licence requirements.
