Amidst the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s overwhelming success, it’s important to remember the struggles faced by the company’s characters in their earlier attempts at the big screen. One prime example is the multiple failed adaptations of The Punisher.
Dolph Lundgren was the first to bring to life the gun-toting vigilante Frank Castle, but his portrayal only gained a cult following. Years later, Thomas Jane took on the role in an underrated reboot that even had a planned sequel, but disappointing box office returns halted development. Ray Stevenson then starred in the eccentric Punisher: War Zone, which fared even worse. Finally, Netflix found success with Jon Bernthal’s iteration in Daredevil and his subsequent standalone series. However, as Daredevil: Born Again exists separately, Bernthal’s return signifies a different version of the character.
In total, we will have seen five different versions of the Punisher portrayed by four actors across three production companies and two streaming services. This emphasizes the difficulty in getting the character right. Interestingly, the 2004 version, available on Netflix, is currently gaining immense popularity, with FlixPatrol identifying Thomas Jane’s film as one of the most-watched movies on the platform this weekend.
