Neal Kirby, Jack Kirby’s Son, Shares Response to Stan Lee Disney+ Documentary

This week, Disney+ premiered a new documentary highlighting the life and work of Stan Lee, the legendary co-creator of Marvel Comics. Jack Kirby, the late father of Neal Kirby, issued a statement in response to the documentary. Kirby, along with Joe Simon, co-created Captain America in 1940, which went on to become a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe. Additionally, Kirby played a major role in the creation of numerous iconic Marvel characters such as the X-Men, the Avengers, the Hulk, and many more. However, due to disputes over credit, payment, and returned artwork, Kirby left Marvel for DC Comics where he created characters like Darkseid and the New Gods. Eventually, he returned to Marvel and continued his creative endeavors in the form of animation and creator-owned comics. Kirby passed away in 1994 at the age of 76. The debate over the level of contribution between Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the creation of the Marvel Universe has been ongoing. In fact, this controversy led to a lawsuit against Marvel and its parent company, Disney, resulting in a settlement of over $30 million. While the new documentary on Stan Lee has received praise from critics, some have criticized it for lacking insight into Lee’s conflicts with Kirby and other creators. Despite these differing opinions, the documentary has garnered an 88% critics rating and a 100% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Neal Kirby’s statement emphasizes that Lee used his position of influence within Marvel to shape his own narrative around the creation of Marvel characters. Neal also highlights the stark contrast between Lee and his father in terms of their knowledge and expertise in subjects like history, mythology, and science. Neal points out that while Lee’s name appears as a co-creator on nearly every Marvel character from the 1960s, Kirby’s name is absent from only one character, the Silver Surfer. Neal suggests that Lee’s dominance in the industry and his ability to cultivate a public image worked to overshadow the contributions of other creators, including his father. Neal ends his statement by urging a more accurate and fair representation of the history of Marvel comics and its creators.
