‘Meg 2’ Director Ben Wheatley on Throwing Actors Into the Mouth of the Meg

The Big Picture

  • Meg 2: The Trench offers a thrilling and intense experience as multiple prehistoric creatures wreak havoc on humans in the ocean.
  • Director Ben Wheatley discusses the excitement of venturing inside the Meg’s mouth in the sequel and embracing the fear of being eaten alive.
  • Jason Statham reprises his role as the determined Jonas Taylor, encountering various sea monsters. Meg 2: The Trench is now showing in theaters.

Meg 2: The Trench is making its way to the big screen, reintroducing the prehistoric monster and its species that continue to terrorize tourists in the ocean. This time, the ancient sharks are ready for a bigger fight, accompanied by other prehistoric creatures from the deep. In a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, director Ben Wheatley discussed the practical effects used to place characters inside the monster’s mouth:

“We had a kind of bumper bar or something similar, with people in the swimming pool. We would pull them over and pull them down from underneath. [Laughs] It was a lot of fun. And then, of course, there’s great CG to enhance the scene.”

Meg 2 promises to be even bigger and more daring than its predecessor, featuring multiple creatures that terrorize humans simultaneously. While the first installment only had a couple of megalodons as the main antagonists, the sequel introduces an unprecedented number of giant maritime fauna that will haunt the team studying them and those seeking to exploit their prehistoric power.

The filmmaker revealed to Weintraub that after envisioning the idea of going inside the Meg’s mouth, they were determined to bring it to life:

“I had come up with various gags for the sharks, and the interior mouth shot was one that stood out. ‘Oh god, we gotta do that. It’s great!’ The fear of people being eaten alive and the unknown of what happens inside the monster’s mouth adds to the excitement. The Meg is massive, and once you’re inside, you’re left wondering what happens next. It’s a fun element.”

Jonas Taylor Is Diving Deep in ‘Meg 2: The Trench’

Jason Statham returns as Jonas Taylor, a former rescue diver, who is still haunted by his encounters with the Meg in the previous film. Determined to learn more about the mythical creatures that inhabit the ocean depths, he embarks on a quest that brings him face-to-face with a variety of sea monsters. The safety of those near the shoreline rests on his shoulders. Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy also star in the sequel.
