India’s feature phone market grows by 9%: Report

India’s feature phone market experienced significant growth in Q2 of 2023, as reported by CyberMedia Research (CMR). Shipments of feature phones in the overall market saw a 9% year-over-year (YoY) increase. The report also highlights that while 2G feature phone shipments remained stable, 4G feature phone shipments saw a significant rise.

According to the report, 4G feature phone shipments experienced an impressive 108% YoY growth. This growth can be attributed to popular feature phone models such as Nokia 8000 4G, Nokia 106 4G, and Itel Magic X Pro. CMR predicts that India’s 4G feature phone market will continue to grow in 2023 with the introduction of phones like Reliance’s JioBharat.

Leaders in India’s Feature Phone Market

Itel emerged as the leader in India’s feature phone market, capturing a 35% market share, followed by Lava (30%), Nokia (11%), Karbonn (4%), and Samsung (3%). Karbonn witnessed impressive growth of 421% since Q2 2022, while Samsung’s shipments declined by 74%. Itel and Lava saw a 29% increase in shipments, and Nokia experienced a 39% rise in feature phone shipments.

Decline in India’s Overall Smartphone Market, Rise of 5G Segment

The report also reveals that the share of 5G smartphone shipments in India has increased to 47%. In Q2 2023, 5G smartphone shipments grew by 45% YoY, while the overall smartphone market saw a decline of 6%. Samsung dominated India’s 5G smartphone market with a 24% market share, followed by OnePlus with a 20% market share. OnePlus surpassed Xiaomi, Realme, and OPPO to secure the second position.

The overall mobile market in India experienced a 2% YoY decline. The value-for-money smartphone segment (Rs 7,000 – Rs 25,000), which accounted for a 72% share, was the largest contributor. However, due to slow demand, shipments in this segment declined by 16%. The report also notes a 51% YoY growth in the affordable smartphone segment (below Rs 7,000), driven by models such as Redmi A2 and Infinix 7 HD.
