Marvel VFX Workers Petition to Unionize Due to Studio’s Working Conditions

The Big Picture

  • After years of overworking and underpaying, VFX professionals at Marvel Studios have voted to unionize their sector.
  • This marks the first time that visual effects professionals have come together to demand fair treatment, equal rights, and wage protections.
  • The VFX professionals are requesting an election for their representative to be held by August 21.

2023 has already witnessed historic moments in the entertainment industry, such as the simultaneous WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike that occurred for the first time in 60 years. However, more groundbreaking events are on the horizon. As reported by Vulture, VFX professionals associated with Marvel Studios have made the decision to unionize. This comes as no surprise, considering the consistent overworking and underpaying of workers in this field, particularly in the realm of The Avengers.

Following a petition filed by a group of more than 50 employees, the visual effects professionals are seeking representation from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), an organization dedicated to safeguarding the rights and interests of workers in various sectors of film, television, and theater. This groundbreaking action marks the first time that visual effects professionals have united to demand fair treatment, equal rights, and wage protections that are afforded to workers in other areas.

In an official statement, VFX organizer for IATSE, Mark Patch, emphasized that VFX professionals have endured unacceptable working conditions for far too long and it is high time they took a stand:

“For almost half a century, workers in the visual-effects industry have been denied the same protections and benefits their coworkers and crewmates have relied upon since the beginning of the Hollywood film industry. This is a historic first step for VFX workers coming together with a collective voice demanding respect for what we do.”
