The introduction of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” sets a dark and deceptive tone for the series. In the opening scene, Martin Freeman’s character, Agent Everett Ross, is shot by Talos (played by Ben Mendohlson) and is revealed to be a Skrull after his death. This raises the question of whether Ross was always a Skrull. To find out, we spoke to Freeman about his role in the series.
In an interview with Collider’s Christina Radish, Freeman discussed his reaction to learning that Ross would be portrayed as a Skrull in “Secret Invasion.” He revealed that chronologically, the series overlaps with “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” where he also appears as the estranged partner of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the director of the CIA.
Freeman clarified that he was not given advanced notice that Ross would be a Skrull in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” He played the character as a human and was not interested in retroactively changing the story. He expressed his enjoyment of portraying Ross as an organic human and rejected the idea of him being a Skrull all along.
Freeman shared his perspective on his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He explained that he never assumes he has a future in the MCU and always considers each project as potentially his last. He acknowledged that he is not one of the main characters and sees himself as a substitute player who can contribute when needed. Regardless, he views any future appearances in the MCU as a welcome bonus.
