La’an and Kirk Actors Express Their Reactions to the Surprising Twist in This Week’s Strange New Worlds

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Season 2, Episode 3 of “Strange New Worlds”, titled “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”.

“Strange New Worlds” continues its impressive second season with Episode 3, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”. This particular episode takes a page out of the early episodes of “Star Trek: The Original Series” and presents a thrilling time travel story. Written by David Reed, the script features an unexpected partnership between La’an Noonien-Singh (played by Christina Chong) and an alternate version of Captain James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley). Stranded in 21st century Toronto, they must unravel a nefarious plot to alter the timeline. Along the way, they seek help from Pelia (Carol Kane), a pre-Federation character, and encounter a young Khan Noonien Singh. As their adventure unfolds, a surprising romance blossoms.

For long-time Star Trek fans, there are undoubtedly shades of the iconic episode “The City on the Edge of Forever” by Harlan Ellison and D.C. Fontana in “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.” To gain insight into how this classic influenced the episode and the intricacies of the time travel and moral quandaries explored, IGN spoke with executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, as well as actors Chong, Wesley, and Kane.

When asked about the inspiration behind the time travel idea, Goldsman highlights “The City on the Edge of Forever” as a seminal episode of the franchise. While not aiming to replicate it, he acknowledges the similarities, specifically the depth and loss associated with the love story. Alonso Myers adds that “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” evolved naturally, with the emotional arc of the story taking it in a direction similar to “City.”

The unlikely pairing of La’an and Kirk came about as the writers sought to provide a compelling storyline for Chong in Season 2. Alonso Myers emphasizes the importance of exploring different ideas and allowing Chong and Wesley to build upon the rapport they established in Season 1. The dynamic between the characters is primarily comedic, with a playful, competitive energy. However, as Chong explains, the turning point in their relationship occurs when La’an realizes Kirk sees her as an individual, free from the judgment associated with her surname.

By setting the episode in the 21st century, the audience gains additional context about Pelia’s past and her connection to Earth. Kane acknowledges the script’s ability to add depth to her character, as Earth Pelia is distinct from Starfleet Pelia in terms of experiences and changes over time. Although uncertain about exploring her character’s history further, Kane found the opportunity to engage in a scientific discussion with La’an and Kirk to be enjoyable, as she approached the scene without preconceived notions about Kirk’s lore.

The episode takes a poignant turn when Kirk, inspired by La’an’s stories about the future Federation and a more united world, ultimately sacrifices himself for the greater good. Wesley commends the opportunity to delve into Kirk’s unique worldview and highlight his heroism. La’an, devastated by Kirk’s sacrifice, remains determined to complete their mission and encounters a young Khan Noonien Singh, who is being used as a genetic experiment. Faced with the choice to kill the future tyrant or show compassion and save him, La’an embodies the moral dilemmas often seen in Star Trek. Chong expresses her appreciation for exploring La’an’s growth and her ability to set aside her familial connection to Khan in order to be a better person.

Overall, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” is a standout episode that pays homage to the classic Star Trek time travel narratives. The performances of Chong, Wesley, and Kane, combined with the intricate storytelling and moral quandaries, make it a must-watch for fans of the series.
