John Romero, the legendary developer of Doom, takes on the notorious ‘MyHouse’ map

Picture the Mind behind Doom Playing Your Custom Doom Map

If you haven’t been keeping up with the Doom community lately, you may have missed out on the intriguing .WAD file known as “MyHouse.” This unique, unauthorized map has been gaining attention on several YouTube channels as fans delve into its peculiarities.

Now, this custom level has made its way to the computer of John Romero himself. As one of the co-creators of the original Doom and Doom 2, Romero holds a revered status in the gaming world. He played a significant role in shaping the early days of the FPS genre while working with id Software as a young designer and programmer. His contributions to development are just as legendary as his iconic long hair.

Watching Romero play the “MyHouse” WAD file is an intriguing spectacle, especially as he delves deeper into the level. Without revealing too much, MyHouse.WAD, created by Steve “Veddge” Nelson, offers a unique twist on the classic Doom experience. It starts innocently enough, featuring the familiar monsters from the original game, but soon takes a bizarre turn.

Throughout the playthrough, which lasts slightly over an hour, Romero sprinkles in a few comments about the map, frequently describing it as “cool.” It takes him some time to fully explore the titular house and ensure he hasn’t missed anything. However, once the action picks up, he’s clearly impressed by Veddge’s creation. Romero particularly enjoys how the music evolves as he progresses through the level.

Although some may argue that Romero hasn’t made as much of an impact since the early days of Doom and Quake, he is still an active game developer. In fact, he continues to tinker with Doom, having released the SIGIL episode in 2019 and currently working on SIGIL 2.

If you’re interested in trying out MyHouse.WAD for yourself (which we highly recommend), you can download it from Doom World. Please note that you’ll need GZDoom to run it.
