Jensen Ackles Expresses Interest in Portraying Batman in the DCU

The announcement made by DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran about the introduction of a new version of Batman in The Brave and the Bold has sparked curiosity among fans regarding the actor who will don the Dark Knight’s suit. Many are hopeful to see Jensen Ackles take on the role, known for his portrayal of Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural. During the Jus In Bello Convention in Italy, Ackles expressed interest in playing the character, stating, “Could I do it? Sure. Would I want to do it? Yes.” However, Ackles clarified that he hasn’t had any discussions with DC Studios about the role, jokingly adding, “You gotta put in a bat suit and be a superhero, seems like a lot of work, you know. I would love it. Sign me up.”

While fans await further updates on Ackles potentially playing Batman in live action, he has already lent his voice to the character in several animated films in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line. He debuted as Batman in the two-part film Batman: The Long Halloween in 2021 and reprised the role in Legion of Super-Heroes and the upcoming film Justice League: Warworld. All these films are part of the Tomorrowverse, a shared DC Universe that began with Superman: Man of Tomorrow. Prior to voicing Batman, Ackles portrayed Jason Todd/Red Hood in the 2010 animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood.

In addition to live-action adaptations, Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe will feature both live-action and animated projects. The animated series Creature Commandos will be among the first projects, with Safran revealing their intention to cast actors to voice the characters they want to see in real life. Viola Davis will be one such actor, reprising her role as Amanda Waller from the DCEU in both mediums, including the upcoming live-action series Waller.

Meanwhile, fans can currently stream the animated films featuring Ackles as Batman on Max. Check out the trailer for Batman: The Long Halloween below:
