Ericsson Mobility Report: India’s 5G to Occupy Nearly 57% of Mobile Subscriptions by 2028

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, the number of 5G subscriptions in India is projected to reach approximately 10 million by the end of 2022 and account for around 57 percent of mobile subscriptions in the country by the end of 2028. This makes India the fastest-growing 5G region globally. The report attributes this growth to the launch of 5G services in October 2022 and the extensive network deployments under the Digital India initiative.

Despite geopolitical challenges and macroeconomic slowdown in some markets, global communication service providers are still investing in 5G, as highlighted in the June 2023 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report. The report states that the adoption of 5G technology has surpassed one billion subscriptions worldwide, resulting in positive revenue growth for communication service providers in leading 5G markets.

The report also predicts that by the end of 2023, there will be over 1.5 billion 5G subscriptions globally. North America has experienced stronger-than-expected 5G subscription penetration, with a 41 percent market share at the end of 2022.

Additionally, the report emphasizes the continuous growth of global mobile network data traffic, with an expected average usage per smartphone of over 20GB by the end of 2023. Leading 5G markets have also seen revenue growth due to the increase in 5G subscriptions.

Globally, around 240 communication service providers have launched commercial 5G services, with approximately 35 deploying or launching 5G standalone (SA) services. The most common 5G services offered to consumers include enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), and AR/VR-based services such as gaming, training, and education.

Moreover, the report highlights how 5G is driving innovation in mobile service packaging. Many communication service providers now offer bundles that include popular entertainment services like television, music streaming, and cloud gaming platforms. Currently, about 58 percent of 5G service providers offer such bundles in various forms.

Looking ahead, Ericsson estimates that by 2028, 5G will account for nearly 80 percent of all FWA connections.

In conclusion, the Ericsson Mobility Report paints a positive picture of the growth and impact of 5G technology in India and globally, highlighting the significant opportunities it presents for communication service providers and the wider market.
