Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso took a refreshing turn in the middle of its third season by sending AFC Richmond to Amsterdam, giving viewers a chance to see the characters in a new environment. While there, the team’s owner, Rebecca Welton, falls into a canal and is rescued by a man named Matthijs. They spend the day and night together, but Rebecca doesn’t even get his name before leaving. Later, at the airport, she bumps into Matthijs again, and they reconnect and start a relationship.
Rebecca’s romantic arc throughout the show makes Matthijs a good fit for her. When viewers first meet Rebecca, she is coming off a toxic marriage and barely holding it together. She hires Ted to tank the football team that she owns out of spite to her ex. However, over the course of the series, Rebecca goes on a journey of healing and discovers what makes her happy. In the second season, she begins a relationship with one of Richmond’s players, Sam, which doesn’t have long-term potential due to a conflict of interest. Through this relationship, Rebecca learns about the possibility of being happy outside of her healing, increasing her desire for a partner and a family.
Rebecca and Matthijs’ Amsterdam meeting has incredibly romantic energy and feels like it’s straight out of a romantic comedy movie. They have a meet-cute moment when Matthijs rescues her, and they share banter that is so characteristic of the first act of a romance. If the show had left things there, with Matthijs being a moment of romantic what-could-have-been on vacation, it would have been all right. However, bringing Matthijs back in the finale gives Rebecca’s romantic arc the kind of rom-com energy that the show embodies.
There was some speculation that Ted and Rebecca would end up together, but after the character arcs in the finale, it is clear they are better off as friends. Rebecca deserves someone who can put her first, and although Ted and Rebecca seem to be each others’ counterparts, they cannot and should not be together. Instead, Rebecca chooses Matthijs, who can move to London because of the flexibility in his job. After all she has been through, Rebecca deserves the fairy-tale ending she got.
