In the four seasons of Never Have I Ever, Devi Vishwakumar’s high school journey is documented, showcasing her relationships, aspirations, and personal growth. From a girl struggling with her physical and academic challenges to a mature woman content with what she has achieved, Devi’s story is about coming of age.
However, it’s a bit disappointing when the series’ Season 4 finale reveals that Devi had gotten everything she wanted right from the start. Her acceptance into Princeton, her dream college, was supposed to be a life-changing moment, but it turned out to be quite anti-climactic. Furthermore, neglecting the non-traditional career paths and negative impacts of obsessive American college culture contradicts the messages conveyed in the series earlier.
Devi’s obsession with Princeton was more of an unhealthy coping mechanism than a genuine interest in the college as it hindered her journey towards self-love. Her narrow-minded focus cost her friendships and jeopardized her mental health. However, despite all the struggles she faced to get the acceptance letter, it still seemed simplistic and devoid of proper character development.
In a growth-centric series like Never Have I Ever, Devi’s college choice should have been more reflective of her development as a character. In contrast to Devi, the other characters select colleges based on what aligns with their passions and dreams. Devi’s choice of Princeton also seems to lack context as we do not know what she wanted to study.
Lastly, the series briefly touches on the serious issue of intense pressure surrounding American college culture in some of its episodes but fails to apply the same treatment to Devi, the main character. Devi should have had the opportunity to question her college choice and explore non-traditional career paths discussed in the show. Although being accepted into her dream college is a significant achievement, it does not entirely align with Devi’s coming-of-age story.
