ISRO Releases First Images of Moon Captured by Chandrayaan-3 After Entering Lunar Orbit

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled the first breathtaking images of the moon, captured by Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar expedition. Chandrayaan-3 successfully entered the moon’s orbit on Saturday, capturing these mesmerizing glimpses of the lunar surface.

The official Twitter handle of the mission shared, “The Moon, as observed by the remarkable #Chandrayaan3 spacecraft during Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) on August 5, 2023.”

ISRO confirmed that Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota, has traveled around two-thirds of the distance to the moon and elegantly maneuvered itself into the lunar orbit.

This achievement makes India the fourth nation, following the United States, China, and Russia, to successfully land its spacecraft on the moon. It showcases India’s prowess in accomplishing a secure and gentle lunar landing.

After landing, Chandrayaan-3 will operate for one lunar day, equivalent to approximately 14 Earth days. This extended duration will allow for an in-depth exploration of the lunar terrain.

With an approved cost of Rs 250 crore (excluding launch vehicle cost), Chandrayaan-3’s development phase commenced in January 2020, initially targeting a launch in 2021. However, the unforeseen delay caused by the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the mission’s timeline.

Chandrayaan-3 is ISRO’s determined follow-up to the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which faced challenges during its soft landing on the lunar surface in 2019 and ultimately did not achieve its primary mission objectives.
